Doxy Wand Massager – Sex Toy Review
From the moment I purchased it, my Hitachi (I know that the Hitachi are now technically called “The Original Magic Wand” but that is such a mouthful, I just can’t bring myself to type that repeatedly when we all know what a Hitachi is.) has been my go-to lazy girl’s masturbation tool. It’s always plugged in, under my bed and within arms reach. When the mood strikes, I just roll over, turn it on, and seconds later I’ve achieved orgasm. I don’t even have to take off my pants. I like this. This works for me. So why on earth would I mess with a good thing?
But, every where I went there was always someone saying “But have you tried the Doxy?” Like it was somehow even more magical than my beloved Hitachi. I resisted, I closed my ears, and went “LA LA LA LA” every time someone suggested that I try out this vibrating interloper. There was just no way anything could replace my Hitachi as the wand under my bed… right?
Right. (At least at first….)
The Doxy and I did not hit it off right away. It was not love at first sight. I did not hear angels sing while I melted into a puddle of delicious orgasm. It just didn’t happen. That’s not to say I didn’t orgasm, it just wasn’t anything special and it took much longer than I’m used to with my Hitachi. Part of me feels like this could possibly be because I am just so in love with the Hitachi, my clit slammed the door in the Doxy’s face, mumbling something about having already found religion, now get off my lawn before I call out the dogs… (Did I mention my clitoris is a crotchety old man?)
After having it plugged in by my bed for about a week, I am left just a little bit disappointed. It has not served me all that well as a quick, through the pants, lets-get-our-orgasm-on-right-now, sort of toy. The vibrations come through a little weak for me when there is a layer or two of clothing between it and my clit. Nearly every time I ended up switching to the Hitachi to finish myself off quick and dirty like.
The Doxy touts itself as “the world’s most powerful wand massager,” and I suppose if you base your idea of powerful solely on the number of rotations per minute, then maybe it’s true. On its highest speed the Doxy reaches approximately 9000 RPM, but I’m not all that convinced that speed equals more intensity.
Is the Doxy a hopeless cause? Not entirely, there are things I like about it… it just doesn’t function the way I want it to. Maybe if the Doxy had been my first wand and I wasn’t already sexually imprinted on the Hitachi I’d be more in love with it. There is honestly nothing wrong with the Doxy, it is deep and rumbly, it has power, and aesthetically, it is waaaaay more attractive then the vaguely medical looking Hitachi. And the longer I keep the Doxy by my bed, the more the wand is growing on me… I can see that our love affair my not be the passionate sort that burns fast and bright… but we may be developing a slow, intimate, sort of connection as time goes by. Check back in with me in a month or so…
The gentler speeds do allow me to use the Doxy directly on my more sensitive skin, but because the head isn’t silicone I have a hard time trusting it against my vagina. I just don’t know how well it can truly be cleaned, even though they claim the head to be made out of “hypoallergenic medical grade material that is free from latex or undesirable phthalates.” What does that mean? I’m guessing the head is probably still porous (like the Hitachi) and not something you are going to want to share around at your next orgy. Of course, there are silicone tops that can be purchased for use with the Hitachi, and from what I’ve heard, you can fit most of those on the Doxy as well. (Update: Doxy has stepped it up and the new generation of Doxy Wands come with a silicone head! Score!)
One thing the Doxy definitely has over my Hitachi is cord length. I love having the little extra wiggle room when I plug in. It allows my boy-toy and I a little more freedom to switch up positions and use up a larger span of our bed instead of being tethered to the far left side with the shorter corded Hitachi.
The Doxy also features a longer, sleeker body, and bigger head. The Doxy is a classy looking wand, it actually feels like a sex toy. My Hitachi looks like some sort of ugly, medical grade implement you would find in your grandma’s medicine cabinet. The Doxy is pretty, its curvy, it feels good in my hand. The head (even if I find the material questionable) feels so luxurious, textureless and smooth. Another bonus, you’ve also got color options when ordering: black, pink, purple, and white! For the record, my Doxy is white (boring.).
A surprising feature (surprising, because it took me almost a week to notice it) is that on the Doxy there exists a pulsating feature. I had no idea, of course, I’m the throw the instructions out and figure it out on the fly sort of gal, so it was a great discovery when I hit upon it. To activate that particular mode all you’ve got to do is press the “on” button then hold it down until it starts to pulsate. Magic! I don’t really use this feature all that often, but it is pretty awesome that it exists!
The Doxy doesn’t buzz at vagina numbing speeds like the Hitachi, you definitely get a larger variety of deep rumbling vibrations to cycle through – 20 speeds from my count. While I did enjoy the lower speeds, where I could really feel the roll and rumble against my clit, I was underwhelmed by anything higher than its mid-line starting vibration. It almost felt like the faster I pushed it, the less I could actually felt it.
When reviewing anything that vibrates, one of the big questions is “How loud is it? Will everyone know I’m masturbating?” Happily, the Doxy is quieter then the Hitachi, but it is by no means silent. If you have thin walls, the person in the next room might be able to figure out what your up to as soon as you turn it on. But it also doesn’t sound like a jet engine preparing for take off between your thighs.
So, would I recommend the Doxy? Yes, I probably would. If you already own the Hitachi I wouldn’t suggest you run right out and purchase a Doxy immediately. There just isn’t enough going for it to really differentiate the two in my eyes. So, if your Original Magic Wand is getting the job done, save your cash. Do you find the hitachi’s settings too limiting? You’ll enjoy the greater range of the Doxy, is the lowest setting on the Hitachi still too much for you? Then the Doxy’s lower speeds might be right up your ally. If you are looking to purchase your first wand, the Doxy is a great choice for your first powerful wand. You’ll get to experience a wider variety of speed, enjoy the longer cord, and the sleeker look.
